My Top 20 Romantic Comedy Picks for Valentine's Day

Hello lovelies!
Romantic comedies are something which I cannot live without. They're funny, easy on the brain (I don't have to think much when watching them, which is good especially when my brain's all fried out from studying), they're sweet, and tend to have happy endings (who doesn't like happy endings?).

You can pretty much tell from the paragraph above, that yeah, I like romantic comedies. A lovely reader, Sabrina Aziz-Bahaman (thank you dear!) asked if I could do a post on my favourite rom-coms, what with Valentine's Day coming just around the corner and also to break away a bit from the usual beauty posts. I thought it was a great idea, and if you're like me where you'll be spending Valentine's alone (or if you're not like me and will be spending it with loved ones, hehe!), watching rom-com movies and eating some goodies like chocolate is a pretty nice way to spend some 'me time'. So here's my 20 favourite romantic comedy choices! =)

Oh and before I forget, the list below does not list the movies from my least favourite to most favourite and vice versa. I'm just listing down the movies in no particular order. I like all of them. And there may be a few movies listed which I am not sure are categorised as romantic comedies, if not, they be categorised as a love story at the very least. Hehe.

1. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

A romantic comedy about a man who falls head over heels for a woman who doesn't believe in love. I found this movie interesting because the concept seemed a little different from typical romantic comedies. It had an indie feel to it, but it was still good.

2. A Lot Like Love (2005)

This rom-com is about two friends who have convinced themselves that they would never make a good couple. Howver, they discover they might just be wrong...

3. Because I Said So (2007)

This comedy is about an unconditionally loving, but meddling, mother whose vain attempt to prevent her insecure youngest daughter from repeating the same mistakes that she made leads to a series of comic misunderstandings.

4. Failure to Launch (2006)

A overgrown mama's boy who hasn't found the courage to take flight from the nest gets a little help from the girl of his dreams in the one comedy that proves it's never to late to strike out on your own.

5. A Walk to Remember (2002)

The story of two North Carolina teens, Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, who are thrown together after Landon gets into trouble and is made to do community service. When the two students begin to fall in love, Landon struggles with the drop in popularity that his new friendship brings, while Jamie is forced to deal with her strict father and a secret that she's keeping from her schoolmates. As a Nicholas Sparks fan, this was his first film adaptation that I watched and I've been hooked to almost all ever since!

6. Crazy, Stupid Love (2011)

A middle-aged husband's life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a newfound friend, Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars. - Funny movie, and Ryan Gosling - absolutely droolworthy.

7. Going the Distance (2010)

A romantic comedy centered on a guy and a girl who try to keep their love alive as they shuttle back and forth between New York and San Francisco to see one another.

8. Definitely, Maybe (2008)

A political consultant in the midst of a bitter divorce attempts to delicately divulge the truth about his past relationships to his curious young daughter, who simply won't stop asking questions until she's satisfied with all the answers. His daughter is heartbroken to see her parents splitting up, but she's determined to find out precisely how it was that mom and dad came together in the first place.

9. Easy A (2010)

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is re-imagined as a contemporary high school comedy in this tale of a scheming student who plots to give her popularity a boost by painting herself the easiest lay in school. - I really enjoyed this movie, plus I like Penn Badgley, so that was a plus point for me watching this movie! =D

10. Heartbreaker  (also known as L'Arnacoeur) (2010)

Alex and his sister run a business designed to break up relationships. They are hired by a rich man to break up the wedding of his daughter. The only problem is that they only have one week to do so. - I found the concept of this movie quite interesting and different as well. Oh, and it's a French movie, the first ever that I've watched.

11. Hitch (2005)

A man who teaches dateless wonders how to become irresistible to women and to woo them learns just how hard it can be to do it yourself in this romantic comedy.

12. Life As We Know It (2010)

Two single adults who cannot stand each other are forced to become caregivers to an orphaned girl when their mutual best friends die in an accident. - I found this funny yet sweet, and the baby girl was so cute!

13. Letters to Juliet (2010)

An American girl travels to Verona, Italy — the romantic city where Romeo first met Juliet — she meets a group of volunteers who respond to letters written to Juliet seeking romantic advice. She finds and answers a letter that has been lost for 50 years, and this changes her life.

14. The Proposal (2009)

A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada. Another favourite actor of mine starring here - Ryan Reynolds. Sandra Bullocks is a brilliant actress too!

15. No Strings Attached (2011)

Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly physical and "no strings attached", but it's not long before they learn that they want something more.

16. A Crazy Little Thing Called Love (First Love) (also known as Sing lek lek tee reak wa rak)(2011)

The story depicts love in the eye of young people who first experience it and how it affects their lives and their inspirations. Nam is talented and funny, but with plain looks. She falls in love with the older Shone, one of the best-looking guys in school. Will she get her first love?  - I actually really like this movie- it's 'light', funny, and something that I think many people can relate to. It's a Thai romantic comedy, and may be difficult to find so I've included the Youtube link of this full movie here! It's not the best quality but that's what I managed to find. And Mario Maurer, now he's handsome. =D

17. She's Out of My League (2010)

An average Joe meets the perfect woman, but his lack of confidence and the influence of his friends and family begin to pick away at the relationship.

18. The Notebook (2004)

A poor and passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom. They soon are separated by their social differences. This again, is another Nicholas Spark novel made into a film, and I do not think it's considered a romantic comedy, but it's definitelu romantic so I thought I'd include it in. I've watched this movie at least three times and each time, it has never failed to pull at my heartstrings. Great movie.

19. Ruby Sparks (2012)

Calvin (Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing - as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person. - Again, this movie concept reminded me of 500 Days of Summer, but I still like it.

20. The Holiday (2006)

Two women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other's countries in order to get a new lease on life. After each suffers her fair share of romantic disappointments, Englishwoman Iris (Winslet) and L.A. woman Amanda (Diaz) meet on-line at a website devoted to helping people exchange houses for vacations. Each agrees to spend the Christmas holiday at the other's home, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love.

So that's just some of my picks for Valentine's Day. But it doesn't mean these movies are only suitable for Valentine's, I watch rom-coms almost every week! =D I hope that you'll find the list interesting, or helpful, and maybe I'd have introduced you to one or two movies that you have not seen. There are many more rom-coms that I like but I think if I include them in here the list will go on forever!

So have you watched any of the movies I've listed above? Do you have any romantic comedies that you like and would recommend? =D

xx Amanda
